2pt Series: Quill Earring Making Class for Teens (Class One)

  • Lake City Branch 12501 28th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA, 98125 United States (map)

Class One of Two! This June, Seattle Public Library’s Lake City Branch will offer Quill Earring Making for Teens with Siobhan Kekoa, a 2-part cultural preservation series taught through the lens of a mixed Afro-Indigenous Wabanaki-descent Artist, Culture Keeper, and Medicine Practitioner. Each class is 1.5 hours in length.

There will only be one of these workshops this summer, held at the Lake City Library branch! This class will introduce students ages 14 - 18 to the basics of Quill Earring making in the style of my Wabanaki heritage as taught by my Elders. We will also honor Porcupine and its Medicine.

All necessary materials are provided, and students will bring home a complete pair of wearable, individually hand-made single loop quill earrings with a simple tie off at the top. This final product will be similar to those handmade by Siobhan Kekoa and carried at the Burke Museum.

Please note that the materials are extremely small and production of these earrings requires patience, presence, attention to detail, and dexterity.
